POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Library Director, works in a collaborative environment to promote and provide reference and research assistance, including scheduling the staffing for the Research Help service, managing the chat reference service, and maintaining the FAQs web site; oversees activity at the Library Services Desk; oversees and coordinates a robust student assistant environment; supervises the library's student assistants; teaches in the library's information literacy program. This position is expected to function in a strong leadership role by clearly demonstrating and acting in accordance with library values and serving as a role model for student assistants. This is a grant funded position with a one-year term. Continuation beyond year one will be contingent on available funding.


Essential Functions Statements

  • Research Assistance
    • Leads and directs the collaborative design, delivery, and assessment of reference services, both electronically and in person
    • Coordinates, promotes, and creates research guides using Springshare LibGuides
    • Collaborates with other Librarians to provide reference service during normal reference hours, may be on-call for some nights and weekends by telephone, e-mail, chat and/or in-person
  • Library Services Desk/Student Assistants:
    • Coordinates circulation services and manages the daily operation of circulation duties with an emphasis on ensuring quality service for patrons
    • Ensures Student Assistants are performing daily tasks and working on their specialties or other projects efficiently through various training methods, verbal coaching, and reprimands as necessary
    • Resolves patron problems in conformity with library procedures and policies
    • Develops circulation policies in conjunction with the library staff, maintains, documents, and reviews circulation procedures, and updates WorldShare Management Service as needed
    • Maintains and updates the Student Assistant Library Services Desk Manual, the Student Policies manual, and the Circulation Services manual on a regular basis
    • Interviews, hires, and completes necessary paperwork for new Student Assistants and communicates with HR regarding ongoing employment
    • Communicates with the student assistants on a regular basis with the assistance of the ILL Coordinator
    • Coordinates daily supervision of the student assistants with the ILL Coordinator
    • Provides job skills coaching to help Student Assistants develop workplace skills
  • Participates in the Information Literacy program
    • Teaches around 25% of the information literacy sessions each semester
    • Creates finding aids, and research guides for print and digital collections as appropriate
  • Additional duties:
    • Is professionally active, contributes to developments in the field, and participates in professional activities, including library, campus, state, regional, national committees when possible
    • Keeps abreast of trends and changes in areas of responsibility
    • Evaluates, plans, and recommends improvements in library programs, policies, procedures, and processes, utilizing modern library practices with particular emphasis on excellent public service
    • Maintains routine communication and coordination with the Library Director
    • Assists the public as needed
  • Supports the mission and vision of the College and respects the College's Catholic tradition
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduation from a master's level program in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association within 6 months of hire
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in library/information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • Excellent customer service skills and experience training others to the same level
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent collaborative and team building skills
  • Experience with Integrated Library Systems (esp. WorldShare Management Service from OCLC), SpringShare LibApps, and Moodle or other learning management platforms
  • Demonstrated experience in promoting anti-racist and intersectional practices in the library environment
